Individual Therapy for Relationship Issues

You don't need to attend therapy as a couple to work on relationships.

Relationships can be explored in individual therapy too.

How you communicate, protect yourself, respond to conflict, set boundaries or choose partners often connects to patterns that extend beyond one relationship.

Ava's individual work is strongly informed by Relational Life Therapy, helping clients examine how they relate to others and the patterns they themselves bring into relationships.

What Sessions Look Like

There is a plan, and you're part of creating it.

Individual therapy begins by understanding what brought you in, what's happening in your life and what you would like to be different.

Together, you and your therapist develop a treatment plan based on those needs. Progress is revisited over time so therapy can evolve rather than continuing on autopilot.

Therapy that considers the whole picture

Mental health doesn't exist separately from the rest of your life.

Relationships, work, family, health, finances and the systems surrounding you can all influence how you're feeling and what support is realistic.

Our social work and psychotherapy lens allows us to consider that broader context alongside your internal experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is individual counselling?

Individual counselling is one-on-one therapy between you and a therapist.

Sessions create space to understand what you're experiencing, identify patterns, clarify what you want to change and develop a treatment plan tailored to your particular circumstances rather than applying the same approach to every client.

  • How is individual therapy different from couples therapy?

Individual therapy focuses primarily on you—your experiences, concerns, relationships, behaviour and goals.

Couples therapy focuses on the relationship between partners and the patterns created between them. Relationship concerns can still be explored individually. In fact, Ava incorporates Relational Life Therapy principles into both her couples and individual work.

  • How many sessions does individual counselling usually take?

There isn't a set number that works for everyone.

The length of therapy depends on what brings you in, your goals, the complexity of what you're working through and how things evolve over time.

At True Counselling, treatment planning and regular check-ins help ensure therapy continues to have direction rather than becoming open-ended by default.

  • What can individual therapy help with?

People seek individual counselling for many different reasons, including anxiety, stress, trauma, PTSD, grief, relationship difficulties, burnout, life transitions, emotional regulation and recurring patterns that are difficult to change alone.

You also don't need a diagnosis—or even a perfectly clear explanation of what's wrong—to begin therapy.

  • Is online individual counselling as effective as in-person?

For many clients, online individual counselling can provide a meaningful therapeutic experience similar to working together in person.

Virtual therapy also removes geographic and travel barriers, making it easier to choose a therapist based on expertise and fit and to attend sessions consistently.

  • How do I prepare for my first individual therapy session?

You don't need to prepare a perfect story or know exactly what you want to say.

It can be helpful to think about what brought you to therapy, what feels most difficult right now, anything you've tried before and what you would like to feel or function differently.

Your therapist will help guide the conversation from there.

  • What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

The words counselling and psychotherapy are often used somewhat interchangeably in everyday conversation, although they can describe different depths or types of therapeutic work depending on the context.

At True Counselling, Ava and Amanda are Registered Social Workers who provide psychotherapy within their professional scope. Rather than focusing heavily on terminology, the important question is what type of support, treatment approach and clinician best match your needs.

  • Can individual therapy help with anxiety and stress?

Yes. Anxiety and stress are common reasons people seek individual therapy.

Counselling can help you better understand what is contributing to your stress, recognize patterns in how you respond and develop ways of managing what's happening while also addressing underlying issues when appropriate.

  • How much does individual counselling cost in Ontario?

Therapy rates vary between clinicians and practices.

True Counselling's current fees are available on the Rates & Insurance page. If you have extended health benefits, check whether your plan includes coverage for services provided by a Registered Social Worker.

  • Is individual therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential within the legal and professional limits that apply to your therapist's practice.

Those limits should be explained to you as part of informed consent before or at the beginning of treatment, and you're always welcome to ask questions about how your privacy and information are handled.

You don't have to figure everything out before you start.
