Ontario Wide Online Couples Therapy Online

Get out of the same argument. Understand what's underneath it.

Online couples therapy for partners across Ontario who want to understand their relationship patterns, communicate more honestly and build something healthier together.

When the Relationship Feels Stuck

You may know what you're fighting about. That doesn't always mean you know why it keeps happening.

Couples often come to counselling after months—or years—of repeating the same conversations. Maybe you're fighting more. Maybe you've stopped fighting because you've stopped talking. Maybe trust has been damaged. Or perhaps the relationship simply doesn't feel like it used to.

Couples counselling creates space to look beyond the latest argument and understand the relational patterns underneath it.

Ava's Approach

Relational Life Therapy: looking at the relationship differently

Ava's couples work is primarily informed by Relational Life Therapy (RLT).

RLT looks beyond communication techniques alone to identify the deeper patterns each partner brings into the relationship—how those patterns developed, how they interact and what each person can take responsibility for changing.

The goal isn't to decide who is right. It's to help both people see the relationship more clearly and build healthier ways of relating.

Ava also has training in the Gottman Method, which may inform aspects of the work where appropriate, but Relational Life Therapy is her preferred model in current practice.

What the First Session Looks Like

Start by understanding the relationship—not assigning blame.

Your first couples session is an opportunity for Ava to understand what brought you in, the history of your relationship and what each of you hopes might change.

Together, you'll begin identifying the patterns contributing to the current dynamic and establish priorities for your work.

How Long Does Couples Therapy Take?

There isn't a universal timeline for couples therapy.

The length of couples counselling depends on what's happening in the relationship, how long patterns have been present, your goals and what unfolds through the work. Progress is revisited throughout therapy so you're not simply attending sessions without knowing what you're working toward.

Why Online Couples Therapy?

Less logistics. More room for the work itself.

Virtual couples counselling allows partners across Ontario to meet with Ava without travelling to an office.

For busy couples, parents, shift workers and first responder families in particular, online sessions can make consistent attendance significantly easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does couples counselling work online?

Online couples counselling brings you and your partner together with Ava through a secure virtual session.

You'll explore what's happening in the relationship, identify recurring patterns and work toward healthier ways of communicating and relating. Ava's couples work is primarily informed by Relational Life Therapy, with other relationship-based training incorporated where helpful.

  • What if only one partner is ready for therapy?

That's common. Both partners don't always arrive with the same level of readiness, optimism or motivation. Couples therapy can begin by understanding where each person stands rather than requiring both partners to feel exactly the same way about being there.

If your partner isn't willing to participate at all, individual relationship therapy may also be an option.

  • How long does couples counselling typically take?

There isn't one standard timeline for couples counselling.

How long you work together depends on what brings you to therapy, how long certain patterns have been present, whether there has been a significant rupture such as infidelity and what each partner hopes to change. Progress and treatment goals should be revisited as the work continues.

  • Is couples therapy covered by insurance in Ontario?

Many extended health plans in Ontario cover counselling provided by a Master of Social Work (MSW) or Registered Social Worker (RSW).

Before starting services, we recommend checking how your individual plan is structured, including coverage limits and customary charges for counselling services.

  • How do we know if couples therapy is working?

Progress doesn't necessarily mean you never disagree again.

You may notice that conversations become more honest or productive, conflict doesn't escalate in the same way, you're better able to recognize your own patterns or you feel more connected and understood by one another.

Ava also believes therapy should have direction, so progress and treatment goals are revisited rather than leaving you to wonder whether anything is changing.

  • Can couples therapy help save a relationship?

Couples counselling can help partners understand what's happening in their relationship and determine whether meaningful repair and change are possible.

It can't guarantee that every relationship will stay together—and staying together isn't always the only measure of success. Sometimes the work is about repairing a relationship; other times, it's about gaining enough clarity to make an informed decision about what comes next.

  • What's the difference between couples counselling and marriage counselling?

The terms are often used interchangeably.

Couples counselling can support people in many forms of committed relationship, whether or not they're legally married. Marriage counselling refers specifically to married partners but often addresses many of the same concerns: communication, conflict, intimacy, trust and recurring relationship patterns.

  • How often should couples attend therapy?

Frequency depends on your circumstances, goals and treatment plan.

Many couples begin with more consistent sessions so there's enough continuity to understand and work with established patterns. Ava can recommend a frequency based on what you're navigating together.

  • What happens in the first couples therapy session?

The first session gives Ava an opportunity to understand your relationship: what brought you in, how each person experiences the current problem, relevant relationship history and what you're hoping will change.

The goal isn't to identify the "bad partner." It's to begin understanding the dynamic between you and the role each person plays within it.

  • Is virtual couples therapy as effective as in-person?

For many couples, virtual therapy can provide a meaningful alternative to meeting in person.

You can have the same focused conversations with your therapist while reducing barriers such as commuting, childcare or coordinating schedules. For busy couples, shift workers and first responder families, the accessibility of online couples therapy can also make consistency easier.
